Liz Umlas speaks on Transformative Organizing panel
On October 5-6, Croatan Senior Fellow Liz Umlas participated in the conference “Protecting Rights at the End of the Line: Stakeholder Engagement in Light Manufacturing” at the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center at the University of Connecticut. The conference, aimed at both academics and practitioners in the field of business and human rights, explored tools, strategies and examples of engagement. Umlas spoke on a panel entitled “Transformative Organizing,” which looked at innovative ways in which workers (through trade unions, worker centers and NGO allies) are organizing to address rights violations in the workplace. Her remarks focused on capital strategies: specifically, the work of trade unions to engage institutional investors on workers’ fundamental human rights.
